My Mondrian
http://rhizome.org/artbase/24114/myData/

If you are are the least bit familiar with 20th Century art, chances are than you you've heard of Piet Mondrian or seen a print of one of his paintings. You know the ones with the black geometric lines on a white canvas with blocks of primary color. You probably thought to yourself that "I could paint that!" Well now you can, sort of.

From what we can gather today's featured widget is a serious new media art experiment but don't let that keep you away from My Mondrian. This a widget where you enter some of your personal data and the program "paints" a painting in the style (De Stijl?) of Piet Mondrian that is supposedly unique to you. To quote; "Where a human is reduced to data, data is converted to values, values transformed into art." We guess that's about as unpretentious as you can get for an artistic statement.

Enough about the words, what about the art? While this widget would be a great way to collect demographic information, we are assured that the data is only used to construct the art work. As the painting is being created you can see how your data relates to the final product. Although we have to say that the final artwork lacks the striking colors and line weight variation that characterize Mondrian's actual paintings.

We like this widget because we like the whole idea of using computers to create art. If you like Mondrian, its fun to have a painting in that stlye that is unique to you, that you can print out and keep. Now, as to whether the De Stijl movement was more affected by the supremacist and contructivist movements as opposed to just the cubist, we'll leave that up to you and your friends to debate over a late night Latte.
