Don't let the name of this game fool you like it did us. There aren't any horses in H.O.R.S.E Basketball. But there is a basketball and of course a hoop to shoot it at.
H.O.R.S.E Basketball is more than a mere basketball game. There isn't any of that to-and-fro silliness to sully the true basketball experience. This is a trick shot game. You against your own ability to get an orange ball through a basket. And if you decide to play against the computer with the difficulty level turned up, it's an ego deflating experience that may make you question your worth. There are three different modes of play in H.O.R.S.E Basketball; Practice, versus, and, shoot-out. In the practice mode you can play around and experiment to your heart's content. You're free to play as long as you like. You don't even have to get the ball in through the basket. This is your chance to see what your capable of before you take on the more challenging game modes. In the versus game it's you against the computer in a trick shot battle. You call your shot and then you try to make your shot. If you make it then the computer has to make the same shot or be penalized with a dreaded letter. When the computer controls the ball you're tasked with matching the computer's shots. Whichever player spells "horse" first loses. And finally in the shoot-out mode you have to make shots from different points around the court. Each shot you make gains you a point. If you miss you have to begin again.
The game is controlled through clicking and dragging. The distance you drag the ball determines the power of your shot. You're basically flinging the ball with a digital sling shot. You can fling the ball any direction you wish in your attempts to make baskets; at the wall, the ground, high into the air.
We found H.O.R.S.E. Basketball to be a challenging and magical game. The game-play is easy to learn though not easy to master. The versus and shoot-out modes inspired our competitive spirits while frustrating our perfectionist tendencies.
What made the game magical? It had a floating basketball.
